Nicholas Stedman
Nicholas Stedman was born in Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. After graduating from the University of Cambridge and completing a PhD in Biochemistry at Université Paris VI he decided to become a painter. From the early 1980s the human figure has been central to his work.. Paintings from the 1980s portray groups of emblematic figures forming static or moving groups amid the urban architecture of 'Les Halles' district in Paris or EUR in Rome.
Working with dancers and circus artists and inspired by American choreographers such as Merce Cunningham or Lucinda Childs, Stedman has developed a figurative pictorial system free from narrative, psychological or emotional content with an irreversible fragmentation of the picture space. Recent compositions are polyptyches of multiple body fragments and the surrounding sea or sand, with panels of differing texture and warmth offering a tactile perception of reality. The viewer is asked to reconsider the sense and order of these propositions.
