Divers

Diver Series Paintings – Nicholas Stedman

The Diver Gallery

The Diver series explores male and female figures, poised on cliffs, hesitating, and then leaping into the sea. The series began in 1979 during a stay on the Côte d’Azur, at the end of the Promenade des Anglais where rocky cliffs allow divers to jump from heights of up to 10 meters.

At that time, I was making numerous acrylic sketches from life. The first diver sketch can be seen here.

In 1986, I returned to Nice and completed my first large oil painting of this scene on jute canvas, using American “Oilstiks” for a more expressionistic effect. This painting is available to view here.

Since then, I have explored the idea of male and female figures waiting on cliffs before jumping, working with many models both in the studio—using ceiling lights to simulate sunlight—and outdoors on rocky beaches. Several of these works are displayed in this gallery and have been collected by art lovers worldwide.

One of my diver paintings is currently for sale on RiseArt. You can view it here.
