Dunes

Dunes by Nicholas Stedman, 16-panel polyptych with sand textures depicting a sunbather on the beach

Oil on canvas on wood, 88 X 108 cm

“Dunes” is a polyptych of sixteen wood panels covered with canvas and sand. It captures fleeting moments on a beach, centered on the quiet presence of a sunbather. Each fragment suggests stillness, sensuality, and the passage of time.

The sequence begins at the dunes, where marram grass bends in the breeze and waves break along the shore. She lies on the sand, her hair tousled by the wind, while grains drift across her body and fall from her hands—an image of time slipping away.

Different grades of sand have been worked into the surface of the panels, creating shifting textures that enhance the tactile quality and the tranquil pleasure of sun and touch.

This painting is available at Raffaello Galleria . Another related dunes polyptych can also be purchased directly from the artist and can be seen here.
