In the Dunes

This painting explores themes of passive and joyous acceptance — lying in the sand while the wind bends the marram grass on the dunes, the tide coming in gently with white waves running up the beach, and the body gradually covered by wind-blown sand.

It reflects the passage of time and acceptance of it, symbolized by an hourglass (also known as a sandglass or sand timer) with sand falling from the model's hand.

The artwork is composed of 12 panels, each expressing these ideas with a variety of textures including fresco, acrylic fur, and sand incorporated into the paint to emphasize the importance of the sense of touch.
