Words

These paintings incorporate embossed text that is almost invisible when viewed head-on or lit from the front, but becomes visible—and sometimes even dominant—when illuminated from the side. Each letter is cut from canvas and mounted onto the painting’s surface. Thin and discreet, they rise just enough to remain present without disrupting the flow of the brushwork or the unity of the image.

The embedded text adds a hidden dimension, a quiet voice within the painting. It may pose questions, echo the words of a song or a poem, or offer a reflection on the meaning of the image. Initially, the words were meant to resound like an echo.

I was first influenced by the work of Erik Boulatov, whose 1988 exhibition at the Centre Pompidou left a lasting impression. Boulatov overlays large, bold words across vibrant, realistic landscapes and skies—his texts suggest themes of propaganda and state control, challenged by the calm force of nature beneath. My own texts are more concealed, like a voice-over murmuring behind the image, guiding the viewer to look—and listen—more closely.
