55 Years of Gouache Painting
Since the age of fifteen, Nicholas Stedman has sketched and painted the locations he has inhabited and visited—from local landscapes to distant cities, mountains, and rivers. This gallery provides a visual history of the artist’s life, documenting over fifty years of gouache paintings. From Himalayan temples to Sicilian riverscapes, each piece captures the unique light and atmosphere of the site.
Initially, Stedman utilized gouache as a primary method to observe and record the world. Working plein-air, many pieces remain unfinished due to rain, shifting temperatures, or fading light, yet they continue to convey the raw character of the site. Over time, the artist discovered that painting could reveal more than mere appearances; by selecting specific colors and the structural lines of foliage, the mind reconstructs the scene, uncovering a hidden magic and the subtle patterns within the landscape.
This gallery invites viewers to journey through the evolution of Stedman's artistic vision—from straightforward observation to the discovery of an invisible harmony. It offers an immersive experience of over five decades of the creative process.
